Your Hospitalization
First of all, you need to make an appointment on Doctolib or contact Dr. Schramm's office. Please note that for any first consultation we ask you to have x-rays of both feet and both ankles, weight-bearing, front and side views, taken within the last 3 months. If you do not have these exams, you can contact the office by email once your appointment is made, so that we can make the prescription available in your Doctolib account.
First consultation
During your appointment at the Ankle and Foot Clinic, located at 30 rue Gioffredo, it is only after you have been examined and your imaging has been analyzed that a surgical indication can be considered. In some cases, a second consultation will be necessary, particularly if one or more additional tests are prescribed in addition to the radiographic assessment.
The decision to undergo surgery is yours; it depends on the level of disability you feel on a daily basis or during sports practice. There is no correlation between the severity of the lesions shown on imaging tests (MRI, CT scan, etc.) and the pain you may experience. With the same lesion, some patients are asymptomatic while others are hindered.
We will tell you which procedure is suitable for your lesions and your lifestyle, as well as the results you can expect.
Once the surgical indication has been made, you will then have a reflection period to decide whether you wish to undergo the proposed surgical procedure.
Medical record before the operating room
If you decide to undergo the proposed procedure, Dr. Schramm’s assistant will schedule an appointment with you for the procedure at Clinique Saint George according to your availability and the available operating slots.
We will send you by email a hospitalization file with numerous documents to read and sign (consent forms, preoperative form, anesthesiologist contacts, information sheet about your procedure). You will then need to return all these signed documents by email within a time frame depending on your procedure date. The admission time at the clinic will be communicated to you the week prior to your procedure.
Once your procedure is scheduled, you may receive an email from Clinique Saint George with a PIN code to pre-register in order to facilitate admissions during periods when surgical activity is busy. If you do not receive an email, you will simply need to complete your admission upon arrival at the clinic.
The instructions and guidance to follow preoperatively will be communicated to you during the anesthesia consultation. Nevertheless, we remind you that you must be fasting (no eating, drinking, or smoking) 6 hours before your admission time on the day of the procedure.
The prescription for the medical equipment necessary for your procedure (splints, crutches, wheelchair, etc.) will be given to you at the same time as the medical file so that you can equip yourself before entering the clinic. On the day of the procedure, depending on the surgical procedure performed, you must be in possession of the necessary equipment for your discharge from the outpatient unit or for your hospitalization.
The day of your surgery
You must report to Clinique Saint George at Hall 1 at the time indicated by Vanessa, Dr Schramm’s assistant. You will check in at the admissions desk and proceed to the department indicated so you can be taken care of by the medical team.
Once in your room, you will need to put on disposable clothing, store your valuable personal belongings in the room's safe, and the care team will check your file. The nursing staff will take your vital signs (pulse, blood pressure, etc.) and make sure you have your imaging tests and the medical equipment required for your procedure.
You will be taken down to the operating room on a gurney. Upon your arrival in the operating room, you will then be directed to the "induction room", where the anesthetists will put in an IV. Regional anesthesia, if needed during your procedure, will be administered in this room.
The operating room nurse will then come to get you and confirm your identity and the side to be operated on—this is the checklist. This is a legal requirement to prevent mistakes, just like in aviation. Once this checklist is completed, you will enter the operating room where you will be moved onto the operating table.
The team present in the room will then consist of the anesthetist, an anesthesia nurse, the operating room nurse, the surgeon, as well as their assistant.
The positioning on the operating table depends on the procedure performed.
Once the procedure is finished, you will stay between 30 minutes and 1.5 hours in the recovery room depending on the anesthesia you have received. You will then return to your room, and a snack will be served. Your surgeon will see you before you are discharged.
If an ambulance is scheduled for your return and your surgeon has not finished operating, they will call you that evening. When leaving the ward, you must go through the discharge desk.
The day after the procedure, the surgeon’s assistant will contact you by phone to check on you.
Appointment at the Foot Clinic 3 Weeks Post-Operative:
Once your procedure is scheduled, a post-operative consultation appointment at 3 weeks will systematically be given to you. This will be the time to remove your dressing, remove your cast or to redo it.
